Politically exposed persons JSON
People in prominent public office, from legislatures, cabinets, courts and official registers worldwide, including Canadian federal and provincial sources and the US Congress back to 1789. One consistent dataset for PEP checks at onboarding and throughout the relationship.
Lists of office-holders often give only a name and a role, without a birth date. Confirm a match against the official source before acting on it.

What is a politically exposed person?
A politically exposed person, or PEP, is someone who holds or has held a prominent public role: a head of state, minister, member of parliament, senior judge, ambassador, senior military officer or the head of a state-owned company. Because these roles carry power over public money and decisions, banks and other regulated businesses apply extra checks when a PEP, or a member of their family or a close associate, becomes a customer. Our methodology explains how we decide which roles and sources to include.
How we compile PEP data
There is no single worldwide definition of who counts as a PEP, so we are explicit about what we collect and where it comes from.
- Official sources first. We collect from the bodies that publish the roles themselves: parliaments, election authorities, government gazettes and public registers.
- Every record credits its source. Each person carries the register it came from, the role as published and the date we collected it, so any match can be traced back.
- Roles as published. We keep each person’s position in the publisher’s own words rather than guessing at a level of seniority.
- Each source on its own schedule. Every source has an update schedule set for its publisher, shown in the Updates column of the source table.
How to use the data
- Search it. Search politically exposed persons by name, type or country, free.
- Screen a name. Try the screening tool, or check a name against every PEP source in one call with
POST /api/match/peps. - Download it. The PEP collection is part of the standard data licence; there is no separate PEP licence.
- Build it into your process. Our guide to using PEP data covers choosing a dataset, what to look at in a record, and filtering. How the list is compiled is in the PEP methodology.
