Know your business (KYB)

Company registers, registered persons, beneficial ownership, securities identifiers and vessel registers from official sources: reference data for confirming that a customer, supplier or counterparty is who they say they are.

Held separately from the screening collections and not deduplicated. Figures are never added to the sanctions, PEP or debarment figures.

What it holds

Reference data for checking that a company or person is who they say they are, used to enrich and confirm a screening result. Only screening lists flow into Crown Default; the registers below are held beside it.

  • Company registers. Company name, number, type, status, incorporation date and locality, from national business registers.
  • Registered persons. People recorded in official registers in their own right, with the register, registration number, status and locality.
  • Beneficial ownership. People with significant control over UK companies; see Beneficial ownership.
  • Legal entity identifiers. LEI records from GLEIF, and ISIN-to-LEI links; see Securities.
  • Reference registers. US tax-exempt organizations and FATCA-registered institutions (IRS), US healthcare providers (CMS NPPES) and research organizations (ROR).
  • Vessels. The US Coast Guard vessel register (PSIX): names, call signs, official numbers, flag and build year. It has no IMO numbers.

Not held yet: port-state control inspections, bank identifier codes (BIC), money-services business registrations and offshore-leaks data.

A registry record is not a screening hit. It means an official register recorded the company, person or instrument, nothing more. Registry figures are never added to the sanctions, PEP or debarment figures.

Companies in screening

Some screening records describe a company rather than a person: a sanctioned entity, a debarred contractor, an organization tied to a PEP. These are counted separately from the registers above.

How to use it

  • Search. Registry records are not in public search yet. Search covers the screening collections (sanctions, PEPs, debarment and enforcement).
  • Screening. Screen a company or person with the screening tool or POST /api/match, then use the registry record to confirm who they are.
  • API. There is no public registry endpoint yet. Registry lookups are available through the API on request: tell us what you need.
  • Bulk delivery. Delivered under a licence, subject to each register’s own terms. Where a register’s terms are stricter than our data licence, the register’s terms apply.
