Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions we hear most about the data, the service and corrections. For API questions see the API FAQ.

About the data

What is Crown Intelligence?

A compilation of sanctions lists, politically exposed persons (PEP) registers, debarment and enforcement lists and related public records, gathered from the official publishers and served as searchable records, scored matches and downloadable files. Crown Intelligence is a product of Crown Stack Systems Inc., Oshawa, Ontario.

Where does the data come from?

From the bodies that publish each list: governments, regulators, courts, international organizations and official registers. Every record names its source register, and each register is credited to its publisher on the sources pages and in our attribution notice.

How current is it?

Each register is collected on its own schedule and every record carries the time it was last loaded. The freshness page shows when each source last ran, and each collection page shows its build date.

What is a collection?

A ready-made selection of records: default (everything), sanctions, peps, crime (debarment and enforcement) and maritime. The same names are used in the API paths and in the download folders. See Data.

Why does the same person appear more than once?

Each register publishes its own entry, so one person on three lists gives three records. Where we are confident they are the same party, the records share a merged entity ID (entity_id), and the entities API returns them together.

Does it cover Canada?

Yes. The Canadian sanctions lists and related registers are collected alongside the international ones. See Canada for the registers and their figures.

Using the service

Is it free?

Individual look-ups, due diligence on a specific matter, journalism and academic research are free under our terms of use. Systematic or automated screening, API use in a business process and redistribution need a commercial licence. See pricing.

How do I screen a list of customers?

Use Screening for a single party, or the matching API for batches of up to 20 parties per request. Every result carries a score and an explanation; confirm each match against the publisher's official list before acting on it.

Do I need an API key?

Not today: the public endpoints answer without a key. See Authentication for how access works and what will change.

Are my searches stored?

The matching service does not store the bodies of match requests. Web servers may keep operational logs of requests, which for GET look-ups include the address requested. See our privacy notice.

Which file format should I download?

Simplified CSV for spreadsheets and simple loaders, FollowTheMoney JSON for entity stores, plain names for fast first-pass matching, Senzing JSON for Senzing, and statements for audits. See Using the bulk data.

Records and corrections

A record about me is wrong. What can I do?

Write to [email protected] with the record link and what is wrong. We reproduce what the publisher released, so we will also tell you which publisher to contact if the error is in the official list. See Corrections and de-listing.

Someone was removed from a sanctions list. When does the record go?

Records that a register no longer publishes are marked inactive. Inactive records are left out of search and matching.

How do I credit the data?

Follow the attribution notice: name Crown Intelligence and the publishers of the registers you rely on.
